The early morning sun that boldly flood our garden from the East in an August Sunday, can only be softened by a gentle mist of moisture from the garden hose before the day gets hotter and the wilting begins.

In the brief interlude, the Julia butterfly comes out to play, her tender proboscis curled to a perfect ring, matching her marbled polka-dotted compound eye, like a ladybird-theme chain missing a key.

Over at the peacock tree, the Sunbird stares into the lens, wishing for another flirtatious diversion from the morning’s gathering. His boxy head is encased like a Roman soldier; its neck feathers neatly punctuated like an armoured breastplate with storm-trooper rivets.

Meanwhile, the pale pink, deep purple and yellow Phalaenopsis orchids sheltered beneath, bracing themselves for another sunny day of rest
