With news that Mount Semeru in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park has erupted, and is pouring ash and smoke an estimated 5.6km into the sky above East Java, i am brought back to the recollection of our trek up Mt Bromo at its northern base from Pura Luhur Poten Gunung Bromo.

It may have been 3 years ago, but the memory of that trek through the cloudy haze of a pre-dawn Kafkaesque landscape, transforming itself into an Arabesque mirage with white stallions to boot – this was an experience where humanity’s baggages, its beasts of burden, and the waste we carry, touches the Good Earth everywhere we go – these images will remain with us for a long time to come.
